Making Democracy Work

Protecting Voters and Improving Elections

The League of Women Voters believes that voting is a fundamental citizen right that must be guaranteed. The League is dedicated to ensuring that all eligible voters have the opportunity to vote. We support measures that enhance the smooth conduct of elections and public confidence in election outcomes. And we work for election measures that increase voter participation and representative outcomes.

W have long supported same day registration, and in 2011, we worked with the Protect Maine Votes coalition to restore same-day registration after it was repealed by the Legislature.

Because we believe term limits restricts voters' choices and has other negative consequences for the effectiveness of the legislature, we have opposed term limits in Maine since they passed by initiative in 1993. In 2007, we supported a ballot measure to mitigate the negative effects of term limits by extending the number of terms from four to six. That measure failed.

Here's what we're working on right now.
