What’s going on with Maine school boards right now? Join us for a panel presentation and discussion of this important piece of Maine government and how you can help provide crucial support in your community.
In the past few years, public schools and school boards throughout the United States have been targeted by extremists attempting everything from banning books to attacking teachers to targeting transgender youth. Maine is no exception. School boards throughout our state have experienced contentious meetings where coordinated groups threaten the rights of Maine’s public school students and the institution of public school as a whole. What’s going on? Who is behind these attacks? What are their goals? What do school boards even do, and why are they so often targeted? Most importantly, what can YOU do? How can you help engage your community and protect public education?
Join us on Tuesday, June 4th, for a panel discussion of public school supporters to break down what’s going on. We’ll cover what exactly school boards do, who and what is behind recent attacks on public schools, what it’s like to be on a school board right now, and, most importantly, what you can do to support your schools.
This webinar will be facilitated by several members of LWVME’s Youth Council, who will share their experiences working with their local school boards. These students will be joined by local author, professor, and lawyer Maurice T. Cunningham, who has recently published “Dark Money and the Politics of School Privatization”
This event will be held in a webinar format. Participants will not be visible to each other but will be able to engage with the speakers. The speaker’s presentations will be recorded.
This event is co-sponsored by Democracy Maine, which includes the League of Women Voters of Maine, Maine Citizens for Clean Elections, and Maine Students Vote, and Support Maine’s Public Schools.
