We're baaaaaack! Our weekly Action: Under the Dome newsletter restarts today. We'll deliver legislative updates about our work in Augusta from now until the first half of the session concludes around June 2025. More details below 👇

Welcome to the 132nd Legislature. The Maine "legislature" is split into two sessions. The first session will run from now until June 2025. The second half (a shorter session) will run from January 2026 through April.

The Legislature convened last week on December 4. On the first day of business, legislators were sworn into office, and they elected leadership for the two chambers. Mattie Daughtry (Brunswick) was elected the Senate President, and Ryan Fecteau (Biddeford) will be the youngest ever to serve as the Speaker for the House. The minority leaders will be Trey Stewart (Aroostook) in the Senate and Billy Bob Faulkingham (Winter Harbor) in the House.

The combined chambers also elected constitutional officers: Shenna Bellows was re-elected as Secretary of State, the office which oversees Maine's elections. Aaron Frey was re-elected as Attorney General, and Joe Perry was elected State Treasurer. Matt Dunlap was also re-elected as State Auditor.

What comes next? The Legislature won't really pick up at full speed until the new year. Cloture is set for January 10. Cloture is the deadline for legislators to submit proposed bills for consideration.

What are we working on? The League will focus on voting rights, election reform, and campaign finance, while supporting our partners working for tribal rights, racial justice, and gun safety. Enshrining voter protections through a new Maine Voting Rights Act will be one of our top priorities. We are also working to expand Clean Elections to county-level offices like sheriff, district attorney, and county commissioner.

Volunteer with the League This Winter

The winter season means that it's time to rest – briefly. And then all of a sudden, it's time to get back to work. As Grace Lee Boggs, a social activist who fought for civil and human rights, wrote: "We are beginning to understand that the world is always being made and never finished; that activism can be the journey rather than the arrival."

Volunteers make our work possible. There are several roles to fill that can be accomplished from the coziness of your couch. Check out volunteer listings here
