As we approach the second anniversary of the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, we're reminded of the resilience of our League community and the good folks like you reading this email. Thank you for all that you do!

Are you doomscrolling like the rest of us? With the invasion of Ukraine filling our news feed, we're witnessing an attack on a country's sovereignty and its heroic citizens fight for their democracy in real time. It's hard to watch. This is your reminder to take a moment to breathe *in* and *out* — we're in this together.  

Well, there's a problem. The Supplemental Budget is missing funding for two of our key bills that are still sitting on the Appropriations Table. The first bill is LD 231, which would establish semi-open primaries and increase voter participation. The second bill is LD 1155, bringing true and secure post-election audits to Maine. 

It's our 102 birthday! We were founded on February 14, 1920, after the 19th amendment was ratified and women won the right to vote. It's been a good run so far — fighting for democracy reform and voting rights and informing and educating voters. But we're far from finished.

Here at the League of Women Voters of Maine, racial justice is one of our key priorities. That's why we're standing with the Wabanaki Alliance and their call to submit testimony for LD 1626, a tribal sovereignty bill.

In the last two years, you've likely encountered rampant misinformation across social media with claims of voter fraud and a stolen election. In order to combat harmful disinformation, we're arming ourselves with useful tips so that we can spread accurate, fact-based information about voting and election cycles. 

In 2020, young people turned out at unprecedented levels. Help us create a better network for students and young people by joining our Launch Party.

February is just around the corner. We're planning big things for our birthday, which falls on February 14 — Valentine's Day ♥. We'll celebrate the League way by hosting two workshops, one on combating misinformation and the other one on election security.

Voting rights is our thing, and we'll do everything in our power to protect the most vulnerable voters. While it's disappointing that the Senate failed to pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act last week, we know the road can be a long one. Together, we can still accomplish vital legislation in 2022.
