The League of Women Voters of Maine (LWVME) is participating in a 24-hour hunger strike in solidarity with Arizona students, Black faith leaders, and many other concerned U.S. citizens. The strike demands that Congress pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act now!

League members are joining a national movement by participating in our own 24 hour hunger strike on Wednesday, January 19. We demand that the Senate pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act now! 

This Martin Luther King Jr. Day, let’s use the holiday to honor his legacy, educate ourselves, and take action. Check out this list of virtual MLK events happening across Maine. The League will be demanding that Congress end the filibuster and pass voting rights legislation.

Upcoming this week is a reminder for our new study on Ranked Choice Voting and proportional representation, the special election in the Gorham-Scarborough area, and a recap of the candlelight vigils that took place on the anniversary of the Capitol insurrection. 

On the anniversary of the insurrection of the U.S. Capitol, Mainers came together to host candlelight vigils across the state to say: In America, the voters decide the outcome of elections. To prevent this kind of attack from happening again, advocates are demanding that elected leaders pass urgent voting rights legislation at the federal level.

Here's your 2021 League recap. As we navigate the ongoing global pandemic and continue to fight for major national voting rights bills, there's still so much to celebrate here in Maine. We're grateful to our local Leagues and League community for your continued support.

The LWVME State Board is pleased to announce the launch of a new League study to examine the use of Ranked Choice Voting in multi-member districts to achieve proportional representation.

Join the ranks of Mainers calling Senator Angus King and Senator Susan Collins and asking them to support the Freedom To Vote Act and the John Lewis Voter Protection Act.

Last week was a good week for Maine. On Tuesday, Maine voters experienced a free, safe, and accessible election. Westbrook residents also voted in favor of expanding Ranked Choice Voting to their municipal elections, the second town to do so after Portland.
